Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Ashot Hovakimian attended the Geneva Conference on Preventing Violent Extremism, jointly organized by the United Nations and Government of Switzerland on Friday. At the conference Hovakimian voiced the barbarities committed by Azerbaijan in Talish village of Nagorno-Karabakh. 

In the beginning of his address, Hovakimian noted that before referring to the violent extremism which results in terrorism and gross violations of human rights, it is necessary to understand the essence of this phenomenon, the Armenian MFA press-service reports. The unification of the international community to develop a common strategy becomes an imperative, he noted.

According to the Deputy FM, any support provided to the terrorist groups committing genocidal actions should be qualified as a complicity.

Hovakimian stressed that the unresolved confrontations can pave the way for violent extremism, especially when the state authorities use the confrontations to restrain human rights and propagate hostility on all levels of the society.  

In his speech, Hovakimian also referred to the violent extremism constantly manifested by Azerbaijan, one of the vivid examples of which was granting pardon to Azerbaijani killer Ramil Safarov and making him a national hero. In the context of the military actions unleashed by Azerbaijan in early April, the Deputy FM attached special importance to the international condemnation of the Isis-style barbarities committed against the civilian population in Karabakh’s Talish village, which is a gross violation of human rights and international humanitarian law.  

The Conference was presided by the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Swiss FM Didier Burkhalter .
