Friday is the last day of the City Council election campaigning in Vanadzor, the third largest city of Armenia. The elections, for which eight parties run, will be held on October 2. The candidate topping the list of the political force to win the most votes will become a mayor.

At the meeting with the candidates, Armenian News – NEWS.am correspondent inquired about the campaign results.

According to the Armenian National Congress (ANC) candidate Ruben Voskanyan, who is the director of Potential LLC, his party recorded that several other parties have exceeded their campaigning budget, the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) being the main one to do so.

''Now we are studying the circumstances, following which we will take relevant measures. If the ruling party and ARF Dashnaktsutyun do not win 50+1 vote together and the opposition cooperates, the latter can have their mayor candidate,'' he stated.

Prior to the elections, ANC tried to cooperate with Prosperous Armenia and Heritage Parties. However, the first of the two parties refused to cooperate, the second one boycotting the elections.

In fact, the Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP) list is topped by doctor Aytsmenik Ohanyan.

''PAP has a special role in the political life of the city. The candidates are many, but the index will be normal, I think,'' said head of the party's campaign headquarters in Vanadzor, Hrant Margaryan.

Unity Party, which is headed by former PAP member and ex-FM Vartan Oskanian, is also taking part in the elections. The party list is topped by Vahan Guyumchyan. According to the Deputy Chairman of the party, Stepan Margaryan, the party has chosen the format of yard meetings and once also held a large rally.

''There are buildings in which people haven't lived so long that the window frames have been taken away. The large buildings in the city center have more than 10 flats, where only 3-4 families live. As of 1 January 2015, slightly more than 83,000 people were registered to live in Vanadzor, whereas the voter lists mention about 96,000 of them. This is the oddest thing to be found in those lists,'' Margaryan said.
