The increasing tensions between the United States and Russia have resulted in a situation “more dangerous” than the Cold War, said the German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier in an interview.

In the German tabloid Bild, Steinmeier stressed that the U.S.-Russia relations have further deteriorated since a ceasefire they agreed to in September fell apart in less than a week, and Washington accused Damascus and Moscow of staging “war crimes” in Aleppo.

“It’s a fallacy to think that this is like the Cold War. The current times are different and more dangerous,” Steinmeier added.

Steinmeier also cited differences over Ukraine, cyberwarfare, and end of cooperation on weapons-grade plutonium disposal. As for the Syria, the United States and Russia intent to suggest competing votes over the topic in the UN Security Council.
