A Claude Monet painting, “Meule”, a part of his famous grainstack series, sold at Christie's auction in New York Wednesday for 81.4 million dollars, a record for the French master. The previous record was a million less, $ 80 million, The Daily Mail reported.

This painting belonging to a series of 25 works, was created in 1891.

The estimated cost of “Meule” was about 40 million dollars, it was planned to sell for 45 million.

In May, 2015 Pablo Picasso's work “Les Femmes d'Alger” (Women of Algiers) was sold at the Christie’s auction for 179 million dollars. At the moment this is the most expensive work of art which found the new owner during an auction.
