At least 17 people were killed and 37 more were injured after 56 vehicles piled up on a Beijing-Kunming expressway in north China's Shanxi Province. The accident occurred on Monday morning due to snow and rainy weather, Xinhua reported.

Local police, firefighters, doctors and officials were involved in the rescue operation. An investigation on the case is underway.

According to the provincial authorities, the injured people are in stable condition after treatment.
