The Law on Compulsory Car Insurance is to come into force in Armenia on January 1, 2011. It means that uninsured motorists will have to pay 50,000 AMD (U.S. $140) fines. However, the situation shows many of them will not have their cars insured before January 1, 2011.
A NEWS.am correspondent asked Chief of the RA Police Alik Sargsyan about relevant instructions issued to the traffic police.
General Sargsyan said that no special instructions have been issued. “I would like to ask policemen to show tact and encourage our citizens to insure their cars – it is a government program,” he said.
Fines are unlikely to be imposed on uninsured motorists before January 13, but “our attitude will change after the holidays.”
