YEREVAN. – The draft law on increasing fines for electoral fraud and baning charity during the election campaign contains serious risks from legal viewpoint, MP from the Republican Party of Armenia Gevorg Kostanyan said.

Kostanyan, who is heading the standing committee on state and legal affairs, said the committee gave a positive assessment of the package not to ruin the extraordinary session of the parliament, but under condition that the government will introduce changes in the bill.

In turn, MP from Tsarukyan bloc Gevorg Petrosyan expressed concern that a person who promised to vote for a certain political party may face three years in jail.

“Criminal law does not allow people be held accountable for their opinions and intentions. The promise was equated to giving bribes,” the deputy stressed.
