Brazilian ex-President Michel Temer is formally charged with corruption on allegations to procure a suitcase full of cash from the world’s largest meatpacker, JBS SA, Reuters reported referring to federal prosecutors' statement. 

Temer, who was president from 2016 until the end of 2018, was arrested last week as part of a separate investigation and accused of organizing a large criminal syndicate for receiving bribes.

He denies all charges and was released this week after a petition by his lawyers.

In 2017, the police detained a certain Rodrigo da Rocha Loures carrying a bag with 500,000 reais ($128,166) in cash that reportedly was a bribe from the JBS' owners. Prosecutors believe that Loures was a middleman and transferred money to Temer.

According to Temer’s lawyer, Eduardo Carnelós, the charges were “devoid of any foundation.”
