Japan will name the new imperial era on April 1, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's cabinet will decide the name of the new era on Monday after which it will be made public, CNN reported. 

The government will also provide a short list of candidates for the business and academia group on Monday, as well as the media to hear opinions on the new name.

According to well-informed sources, scientists among the candidates for members of the group, who won the 2012 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine. Before approving the decision on the introduction of a new name, the opinions of the leaders of both chambers of the Japanese parliament will be collected.

The change of the name of the era is an important event in Japan, as the name is used when minting coins, producing calendars, as well as in official documents. The current era is called Heisei - the era of peace. In August 2016, the 125th Japanese Emperor Akihito expressed a desire to transfer his throne to his son in a special address to the people.

Thus, the day of retirement of Emperor Akihito will be April 30, and the day of accession to the throne and the enthronement of the heir - May 1, 2019.
