YEREVAN. - April 10, 1992, proved one of the most tragic days in the history of the Nagorno-Karabakh liberation struggle – genocide was committed in Marag, a city in Nagorno-Karabakh, Hovhannes Sahakyan, MP of the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), stated in parliament.

“Within hours Azeri murderers did away with women, children and old people. Some of them were taken captive, and their fate remains unknown,” Sahakyan said. “The people were murdered because of their nationality, as it was in Baku, Kirovabad, and Sumgait.”

No military necessity can account for the murderous actions, he added. Sahakyan stated that the massacre had been engineered at the state level.

The Armenian MP stressed that the massacres in Marag, Baku and Sumgait remained unpunished, which resulted in Azerbaijan’s current militant rhetoric. On behalf of the Armenian parliament, Sahakyan called on the international community to condemn the Marag massacre and make a legal appraisal of the events. Only by condemning such events can we prevent further tragedies, the Armenian MP said.
