YEREVAN. - If the Armenian authorities go on maintaining the status quo in the country, it may affect the forthcoming parliamentary elections, Zaruhi Bostanjyan, member of the Armenian delegation to PACE from the Heritage parliamentary group, told journalists Monday.

At the PACE monitoring commission`s sitting she stated that, although welcomed by PACE, the reforms in Armenia are insufficient.

“The Armenian authorities must pass from words to deeds and change their policy. First of all, it implies a new logic in the authorities` actions,” Bostanjyan said.

Armenia`s laws enable the authorities to be democratic, but their way of thinking prevents them from applying laws, she added.

“The status quo, political polarization and worsening socio-economic situation may result in social riots,” Bostanjyan said.

At its sitting, the PACE monitoring commission discussed the March 1 2008 events in Yerevan, particularly the problem of political prisoners, with focus on Nikol Pashinyan and Sasun Mikaelyan.

The commission members pointed out that Pashinyan may be released on parole this summer. As to Mikaelyan, he has health problems and needs humane treatment.
