Germany has reported a record COVID-19 death rate, Reuters said.

A total of 952 deaths were reported in the country in a day.

Fears that the coronavirus could get out of control in the country prompted German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the heads of the country's 16 federal states to introduce a tough lockdown.

According to the Robert Koch Institute, Germany has reported a total of 1,379,238 cases of coronavirus infection. The total number of German patients who died from COVID-19 is 23,427.
