BAKU. - Political observer for German Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung Michael Ludwig, who was writing about life conditions in Nakhichevan region, had to stop his trip due to apparent obstacles created by local Azerbaijani authorities.
In his interview with Turan correspondent the journalist said that he received accreditation for his work in Azerbaijani MFA. He informed the MFA representative about his project and plans to visit Sadarak customs office and the Bridge of Hope that connects Nakhichevan with Turkey. However, the official stated that foreign citizens’ visits to the border are limited. The official offered to present a written outline of the project. The following day Ludwig’s written project was approved, provided that he will be accompanied by a representative of Foreign Ministry.
The MFA representative tried to limit Ludwig’s communication with the locals, did not allow the driver to translate conversations, and always reported to someone on the movement of the journalist.
Finally, when the journalist had a minute for private discussion with local people, they told him in Russian that "there is no democracy here."
After that, the MFA representative categorically stated that henceforth Ludwig will have another driver but the journalist decided to end the trip and return to Baku.
In an interview with Turan Ludwig expressed regret that his activities were limited.
"Those who hindered my work do not know and do not seem to understand what the free press means," Ludwig added.
