Camilo Guevara March, the elder of legendary revolutionary Ernesto Che Guevara, died in Caracas at age 60, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said Tuesday.

According to Prensa Latina, Guevara March was on a visit to Venezuela when he died Monday due to a blood clot that led to a heart attack.

"It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Camilo, son of Che and promoter of his ideas," the Cuban president wrote on Twitter.

Camilo was the eldest of Guevara's four children.

A labor law graduate, Guevara March was director of the Che Guevara Research Center in Havana, an institution dedicated to promoting the work and ideology of his father, who remains an extremely influential figure in Cuba.

Born in Argentina, Ernesto Che Guevara studied medicine, then traveled throughout Latin America when in Mexico he met Cuban revolutionaries Fidel and Raúl Castro.

Guevara joined them and helped overthrow the U.S.-backed Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista.

He was shot dead in Bolivia by a soldier in 1967 at age 39.
