YEREVAN.- Unprecedented rise in sugar prices in Armenia is conditioned by international prices, businessman and MP Samvel Aleksanyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

Alexanyan’s “Alex Grig” company is a monopolist in Armenia’s market importing 99.99% of sugar.

The survey conducted by the Armenian News-NEWS.am correspondent in supermarkets showed sugar price jumped from less than $1(AMD 350) to $1.23 (AMD 450) per kilo over a day.

“Old treaties have expired. Sugar was imported under a new treaty providing for new prices, it is the reason sugar price went up,” businessman said.

The current price will remain unchanged for 3-4 months, he said adding that 27,000 tons have been recently imported.

 “However, it is difficult to say whether price will go up in four months,” Alexanyan concluded.
