YEREVAN.- Turkey has a special attitude towards Armenia and Armenians, and a new Turkish Grand National Assembly will neither improve it nor encourage the return of Armenian-Turkish protocols, said expert in Turkish studies Ruben Melkonyan.

According to him, the incumbent parliament has its own pecularities which are not in favor of Armenia.

“Turkish Speaker Cemil Cicek has clear anti-Armenian stance and is the “godfather” of 301 article. Three experts in Armenian studies also entered the parliament, among them historians Yusuf Halacoglu, Seid Sercelik and expert Sinan Ogan whose efforts are aimed at denying the Armenian Genocide. They are to form scientific bases for anti-Armenian research. Therefore, Turkey’s attitude towards Armenia may change for the worse,” Melkonyan said.

In October 2009 Armenia and Turkey signed protocols in Zurich to normalize diplomatic relations between the states. The documents had to be ratified in both countries’ parliaments. However, in 2010 the Armenian president suspended the process due to Turkey’s non-constructive stance. Ankara set preconditions and linked the reconciliation process to resolution of the Karabakh conflict.
