YEREVAN. - Dialogue of authorities and oppositional Armenian National Congress (ANC) can be suspended for thousands of reasons, said MP from ruling Republican Party Hamlet Harutyunyan to a press conference on Friday.
The MP argued that ANC is making a mistake when using the incident between Police and young ANC activists for suspending the talks.
“The statements that ANC gives the authorities a day to address this issue and release the last of the imprisoned young activists are not serious. This incident did not raise the nation-wide wave that is not a matter of national importance - the young men quarreled with the police, and I do not think they got arrested just like that, for no apparent reason. The problem will be settled and forgotten, it is not serious enough to question the continuation of dialogue,” said Harutyunyan, adding that Arakelyan’s release might become a dangerous precedent for everybody, especially opposition activists, to break the law and walk away. “After all, we have a system set up for these cases, let the system look into it.”
Earlier ANC gave the authorities 24 hours to “decide on the status of Tigran Arakelyan” which already ran out. On Friday ANC suspended participation in the 7th round of government-opposition dialogue. On Friday morning ANC rep. Samvel Abrahamyan came to the meeting, saying ANC delegation considered it inexpedient to come to the meeting. The general opinion is ANC representative group did not show up for the meeting because Tigran Arakelyan is still in confinement.
