YEREVAN. – The speculations that Russian Prime Minister’s nomination for presidency might influence the presidential elections in Armenia are insulting, as such remarks are doubting the sovereignty of our country, head of European Integration NGO Karen Bekaryan said at a press conference on Friday.

Responding to a remark that certain circles suppose that Robert Kocharyan is favorite of Vladimir Putin and therefore Putin will support the second president of Armenia if he returns to politics, Bekaryan said:

“The head of the state is elected by people, who do not care what preferences foreign leaders have. Any other approach to the issue is a political disease and needs treatment,” he said.

Speaking about possible changes in Russia’s foreign policy, in particular regarding the Karabakh conflict, Bekrayan said the transitional period in Russia will be prolonged and Kremlin can yield for some time leadership in mediatory efforts. According to the expert, France is likely to take Russia’s place.
