The Armenian Apostolic Church is celebrating Barekendan (Shrovetide) today.
Barekendan is the Sunday before Lent. This year it is celebrated on June 18th.
In this case, Barekendan is dedicated to the discovery of the relics of St. Gregory the Illuminator. These relics are considered one of the greatest shrines of all Christian churches.
On the occasion of the holiday, the church approved a weekly fast from Monday to Saturday.
