YEREVAN. – The 24-hour rally of opposition Armenian National Congress is illegal and must be suppressed under authority of the police, said vice-chairman of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia, MP Galust Sahakyan to a press conference on Tuesday.

"As for me, I would not allow to hold a non-stop rally even for one day, since this is violation of law. The police had to act and prohibit the rally," said Sahakyan.

Asked whether the police should disperse the protesters, Sahakyan explained his position.

"What do you mean by dispersing? The police should simply suppress the rally.

You can allow even a ten-day rally but in accord the law. One time the authorities already did not apply the law, which resulted in formation of an unpredictable, uncontrollable mass, which, in turn, led to the events of March 1. Today, they asked whether March 1 could be repeated. Of course it can, if Levon Ter-Petrosyan goes for it," said Sahakyan.
