YEREVAN. - In 2010 there were 4402 convicts in Armenia, Armenian statistics service informs. This is the highest number during the last 6 years. So, in 2005 there were 3835 convicts in Armenia, 2909 convicts in 2007, and 3580 convicts in 2009.

Most of the convicts, 1438 people, are robbers. Until 2008 the number of robbery convicts was reducing and had reached 916 but then it started to grow rapidly.

It is interesting that the number of banditry convicts was really low, only 2 people were in 2010 and before then there were not any banditry convicts. After the famous operation on Myasnikyan street, several people were accused of banditry.

During the last 6 years crimes connected with drugs had a big increase in number. If in 2005 there were only 265 drug convicts in the colonies, in 2010 that number reached 626. The number has increased by 2.3 times.

The number of convicts accused of smuggling also grows rapidly. In 2010 there were 58 smugglers in prisons. In 2005 there were only 25.
