The Lachin corridor was agreed upon as a link between Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh and has no alternative, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Armenia told the RFE/RL Armenian Service

The RFE/RL Armenian Service asked the Armenian MFA whether Azerbaijan made the opening of the Aghdam road to Nagorno-Karabakh a precondition for Baku to reopen the Lachin corridor.

The Armenian MFA responded that the Lachin corridor should be reopened, and as for other possible communications, this matter should be resolved within the framework of the international mechanism of the Baku-Stepanakert dialogue.

The RFE/RL Armenian Service’s question regarding considering Nagorno-Karabakh's negative stance to receiving humanitarian aid through Aghdam, whether there is any member country in the UN Security Council that is ready to submit a draft resolution on the Lachin issue and whether that prospect is visible in the near future, the Armenian MFA made a reference to the August 16 urgent meeting of the UN Security Council and responded that during this meeting, the overwhelming majority of the member countries of the UN Security Council expressed a clear position regarding the need to restore the activities of the Lachine corridor, implement the decisions of the UN International Court of Justice, and observe the points of the November 9, 2020 statement. It added that there have been countries that have also clearly emphasized that the Aghdam road cannot be an alternative to the Lachine corridor

"Armenia's position on this matter has not changed, and the work with our international partners continues, aimed at Azerbaijan’s implementation of the relevant decisions of the International Court of Justice and the lifting of the illegal blockade of Nagorno-Karabakh, including by implementing the relevant mechanisms of the UN and the UN Security Council," the Armenian MFA added.

Recently, a document attributed to the Russian foreign minister, and regarding the rights of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh within Azerbaijan, appeared on the internet. The RFE/RL Armenian Service asked to clarify whether this is an official document, whether it was forwarded to Armenia and Azerbaijan, and what Armenia's position was in this regard. The topic of the negotiations may become whether Armenia continues to maintain the same position that this is the matter of Nagorno-Karabakh to be negotiated.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia responded that they do not comment on information received from unofficial sources.
