YEREVAN. – The monitoring in 2500 Yerevan grocery stores revealed that 80% do not meet food safety demands, said head of food safety department at the Agriculture Ministry Arthur Varzhapetyan.

According to him, shortcomings in proper labeling the food or selling expired products have become traditional. The legislation provides for AMD 30-300 thousand fines for such violations.

Varzhapetyan claims that the employees of department prefer to explain and give consultations instead of imposing fines. He said a new draft bill is being worked out to oblige business entities to place easily readable labels.
