MOSCOW. – The obstacles that stand in the way of joining the Customs Union are not insurmountable, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan on Monday stated, during his meeting with the students of Moscow State University, within the framework of his state visit to Russia, from October 23 to 25.   

In response to the question on joining the Customs Union, the President noted it is too early to speak about this, but added that Armenia continues to adhere to—not just by words, but by actions, too—the integration processes of partner countries. “Armenia is one of the most important CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) members,” the President stated.      

Sargsyan also noted that Armenia needs to carry out several reforms to become a member in the Customs Union, but the talks have already begun.

Mentioning about Armenia’s possible dividends to be gained in the case of joining the Customs Union, Serzh Sargsyan, however, noted it is necessary to factor in the absence of common borders between Russia and Armenia. “The obstacles exist, but they cannot obstruct the progress of the process,” Armenia’s President stated.
