YEREVAN. - Armenian experts from Humanitarian Demining and Expertise Center handover new demined territories to Syunik region local authorities on November 11. Ambassador of Germany to Armenia Hans-Jochen Schmidt, deputy Military Attaché at U.S. Embassy Justin Budd and other officials attended the ceremony.

“Our snappers demined around 21 hectares since Spring 2011. We found and defused a large number of grenades and bullets of various calibers, antitank and antipersonnel mines,” said the head of the Center Ruben Arakelyan.

Premises of about 60 villages in Armenia remain under the danger of mines remained from the military conflict of early 1990s so far. Around 102 areas of approximately 322 square kilometers are stated as questionable in terms of presence of minefields. Since the establishment of the cease-fire in Armenia more than 400 people were injured, 112 of them died from mine explosions.
