YEREVAN. - Armenian Ombudsman has support from neither authorities nor opposition, Human Rights’ Defender Karen Andreasyan said at a press conference on Wednesday.
Regarding the report by former Ombudsman that both authorities and opposition are dissatisfied by him, Andreasyan said that he is currently in the same situation.
“Ombudsmen in other states are also in the same situation,” Andreasyan said adding he does not need support of political powers. “Support of civil society is required.”
He also added that support of 86 NGOs and media is just enough.
Regarding the question whether the Ombudsman will respond to press reports that human rights were violated during the suppressions of opposition speeches, Andreasyan said that publications cannot serve as a base to instigate cases.
Office can take the initiative and clarify the situation if it refers to helpless people (disabled), or children, who do not know their rights.
