Turkish parliament speaker Cemil Cicek sent a letter to his French counterpart, Bernard Accoyer, informing of Turkey’s concern with respect to the bill, which criminalizes the denial of the Armenian Genocide, which is recently included in the agenda of the French National Assembly.  

The letter notes that the passing of this bill would harm Turkish-French relations. “These matters should be left for historians and researchers,” Cemil Cicek said in the letter, Turkish Haberler news agency reported. 

And as Armenian News-NEWS.am informed earlier, Turkey’s MFA had issued a statement with respect to this bill. “The French authorities know about our country’s sensitivity toward this serious issue. At a time when the Turkey-France cooperation opportunities could enter a development phase, such initiatives would reflect negatively on the course. And the initiating side of all this would bear the responsibility for the consequences. We expect from France to assist so that the disagreement between Turkey and Armenia, in connection with history, be settled through dialogue,” Turkish MFA’s statement specifically read.
