The Danish king has changed the country’s royal coat of arms to display symbols of Greenland and the Faroe Islands—the polar bear and the ram, respectively—more prominently—in an apparent rebuke to US President-elect Donald Trump, report The Guardian and The Independent.

The Danish royal website states that the changes were made by a decree on  December 20 due to King Frederik's desire to create a modern coat of arms that reflects both the Commonwealth of the United Kingdom of Denmark and the history and heraldic traditions.

In the previous version which was adopted in 1972, the symbols of Greenland and the Faroe Islands were placed in one of the four fields of the Danish coat of arms. But now they are bigger and divided into separate fields. Two others occupy the coat of arms of Denmark itself and the coat of arms of its southern Jutland peninsula—in both cases they are blue lions.

Also, three crowns were removed from the coat of arms, and which were in the same field with the symbols of Greenland and the Faroe Islands and symbolized the Kalmar Union between Denmark, Norway and Sweden, which was led from Denmark between 1397 and 1523. A Danish royal statement said this item was no longer relevant.

The new Danish royal coat of arms was drawn up on the basis of a recommendation from the commission which was created shortly after King Frederik succeeded his mother, Queen Margrethe, after she stood down on New Year’s Eve 2023.

The change of the Danish coat of arms comes at a time of increased tension over Greenland and its relations with Denmark, which continues to control its foreign and security policy, The Guardian notes.

It also follows US President-elect Donald Trump’s statement last December that the ownership and control of Greenland was an absolute necessity for the US. But he was rebuked by the territory’s prime minister Mute Egede, who said in a statement in late December: “Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be for sale. We must not lose our long struggle for freedom.”

Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., was expected to visit Greenland on Tuesday, a local government official told Reuters, adding that it was a private visit and that he would be recording material for a podcast and would not meet with any local officials.

And Trump Sr. later confirmed the trip was taking place in a post on his Truth Social website, without mentioning a date. He added: “Greenland is an incredible place, and the people will benefit tremendously if, and when, it becomes part of our Nation. We will protect it, and cherish it, from a very vicious outside World. MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!”
