Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid called on the country's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government to resign on Monday after the country's army chief Herzi Halevy resigned over the October 7, 2023 attack by Palestinian group Hamas, AFP reported.

According to Lapid, Herzi Halevi's resignation honors him.

“Now it is time for them to take responsibility and resign - the prime minister and his entire disastrous government,” he said.

Earlier,  Israel's military chief of staff, Major General Herzi Halevi, resigned on Monday over his responsibility for the failure of the operation during the October 7, 2023 attack by the Palestinian group Hamas.

In his resignation letter, Halevi said he was leaving in recognition of his responsibility for the failure of the military) on October 7, 2023.

“In recognition of my responsibility for the IDF's failure on October 7, and at a time when the IDF has achieved outstanding successes and restored Israel's deterrence capability and power, I am requesting that my term of office end on March 6, 2025. This decision was made long ago.

Now, with the IDF gaining the upper hand in all theaters of operations and with another hostage return agreement in place, the time has come,” Halevy's statement said.
