U.S. President Donald Trump's envoy Morgan Ortagus intends to make clear to Lebanese leaders during her visit on Thursday that the U.S. will not tolerate “unchecked influence by Hezbollah and its allies to form a new government,” Reuters reported.

According to an administration official, a Western diplomat and regional government sources, the message will be that Lebanon faces further isolation and economic collapse unless it forms a government committed to reform, rooting out corruption and weakening the influence of the Shiite movement.

A U.S. delegation led by Morgan Ortagus, deputy special envoy for the Middle East, will meet with newly elected President Joseph Aoun, Prime Minister-designate Nawaf Salam and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri. Salam was tasked more than three weeks ago with forming a government in which leadership positions are traditionally shared among Lebanon's religious communities under a long-standing power-sharing system.

But the U.S. is seeking to limit the influence Hezbollah will have in an effort to capitalize on the defeat the group suffered in its war with Israel last year.

“It's important for us to set the tone for what we think the new Lebanon should be in the future,” a senior U.S. administration official said, while asserting that Washington did not ‘pick’ individual cabinet members but ensured that Hezbollah was not involved in the government.

“There was a war and Hezbollah was defeated and they should remain defeated,” the official added. - You don't want anyone to be corrupted. This is a new day for Lebanon. “Hezbollah has been defeated, and the new government must conform to this new reality.”
