Prince Frederik de Nassau, nephew of Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg, has died at the age of 22 from a genetic disease, Belgian broadcaster RTBF reports.

Prince Frederik suffered from a rare, incurable genetic disease called POLG and knew from the age of 14 that he was doomed to an early death.

His death was announced in a Paris hospital by the POLG Foundation, which was set up by the prince's family to support research into this disease.

Prince Frederic was not related to the line of succession to the Luxembourg throne.
