The French Senate will start debate on the bill banning genocide denial at 6 p.m. on Monday, head of European Armenian Federation for Justice and Democracy Hilda Tchoboian told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

According to her, the Senate is likely to vote for the bill as threats voiced by Turkey urged the Senators, who previously opposed the measure, to openly support it.

Tchoboian said the representatives of the Armenian community of France will hold a picket near the Senate building to support the bill.

Last December the French Parliament adopted the bill penalizing denial of genocides, including the Armenian Genocide. The law, in case of violation, intends one year of imprisonment and a fine amounting to €45,000. To note, Turkey threatened France with serious consequences before the adoption up to calling Turkish Ambassador to France back and breaking trade relations.
