Israel must respect the prohibition on using starvation as a method of warfare, the President of the International Court of Justice, Judge Yuji Iwasawa, announced on Wednesday.

The ICJ will publish an advisory opinion on Wednesday regarding Israel’s obligations toward the presence of international organizations in Palestinian territories.

“The Court has unanimously concluded that Israel is obliged to respect the prohibition on using starvation as a method of warfare,” the judge said while releasing the opinion.

The UN court held hearings from April 28 to May 2 on Israel’s obligations concerning the presence of international organizations in Palestinian territories.

In December 2024, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution urgently requesting the ICJ to issue an advisory opinion on Israel’s responsibilities regarding aid to the occupied Palestinian territories. The resolution was supported by 137 countries, including Russia; 12 countries voted against it, and 22 abstained.
