The United States currently does not have sufficient military resources in the Caribbean region to launch a large-scale operation to remove Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro from power, according to CNN.

But if US President Donald Trump orders strikes on Venezuela with the aim of toppling Maduro, he may face serious problems in the Latin American country due to fragmented elements of the opposition and soldiers ready for rebellion, as well as political backlash inside the US, since he had promised to avoid costly intervention in conflicts abroad, CNN adds.

Also, it assumes that if, as a result of US actions, Maduro leaves the country or is killed, a military seizure of power or even the start of a civil war cannot be ruled out in Venezuela.

The Trump administration has not yet made a decision on launching a military operation against Venezuela, despite the fact that the US has deployed thousands of military personnel in the region, CNN adds.

Washington accuses the Venezuelan authorities of not fighting drug trafficking actively enough.
