YEREVAN. – The attorney of oppositional Armenian National Congress (ANC) activist Tigran Arakelyan, lawyer Varduhi Elbakyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am that a new investigation will be held on Arakelyan’s case, who has been arrested since early July.

“As far as I understood, the investigating body wants to interrogate Sargis Gevoryan and Tigran Arakelyan, but they refuse to give testimonies. I don’t know what will happen news but if the investigating body makes a thorough and unbiased investigation, I think, everything will change for good” said the attorney.

When she was asked if the investigating authority will be unbiased, she replied that “If they have decided to make a new investigation, there is a chance they will be [unbiased]”

Arakelyan had been arrested on July 1st, for violence against a police officer, whereass Varduhi Elbakyan informed Armenian News-NEWS.am, it is obvious that the police attacked and severely beat the young people.

Tigran Arakelyan was charged under Criminal Code Article 258 (hooliganism), but the investigator Hrachya Sargsyan had toughened the accusation and re-qualified to the Article 316 (Dangerous violence against the authorities), which provides 5-10 years in prison. ANC activist’s health is in bad condition. Optic nerve atrophy in the left eye has been diagnosed.
