“According to the news circulated in the press, the reason is the [upcoming parliamentary] elections. A large number of fake passports were issued all at once, the imported batch almost finished, and the Police are using the remaining very small in case of extreme necessity.
[But] Police Passport and Visa Department Chief Hovhannes Kocharyan told our reporter: ‘The demand for passports increased, [and] one of the reasons is that the passports’ expiry date shall not be less than seven years to [be able to] enter the territory of the Schengen [Agreement] countries. By and large, the people wish to change the passports; there is an unprecedented increase in passport issuance. This is the reason for the delays,’” Haykakan Zhamanak writes.
