On Friday, Spain announced that EU intends to open accession talks with Turkey in the next six months during its EU presidency. Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos told the journalists that they plan to open talks on Turkey’s membership to EU in four chapters.

Turkish Today’s Zaman quotes Moratinos as saying, “We have four chapters in mind, and we hope we can open them during our presidency.” The daily recalls that Turkey has so far initiated talks on only 12 chapters.

According to Today’s Zaman, the biggest obstacle to Turkey’s EU membership is a blocked border with Cyprus. In 2006 EU suspended the negotiations on eight out of 35 chapters, as Turkey refused to open the ports and airports to traffic from Greek Cyprus. Moratinos stated that positive result could be achieved and his country is “very, very interested in ending this conflict.”
