YEREVAN. – Armenia’s ruling Republican Party (RPA) is the most certain political force in the lead-up to next year’s presidential elections and the latter are the first matter on its agenda, RPA MP Karine Achemyan stated during a press conference on Friday.

In her words, “it would be very good if the opposition finally decides on the [presidential] candidate issue.” Furthermore, she believes that the likelihood of single oppositional candidate is unrealistic because she does not see its preconditions. “But, of course, we want for the opposition to have a strong candidate. Let them unite, let that candidate emerge, and we are ready to contend,” the RPA MP suggested.

But Karine Achemyan did not agree that Armenia’s body politic is very apathetic before elections. “[But] The political forces are more interested in the elections [than the society], especially during this period,” she added.    

And with respect to the proposal for passing to a parliamentary system of governance in Armenia, the ruling party MP noted that they could discuss this matter, but solely after the presidential race.
