U.S. President Barack Obama reiterated support for Israel’s right to defend itself.

During a phone conversation with Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday, Obama also expressed regret over the loss of Israeli and Palestinian civilian lives.

In his turn Israeli PM expressed his deep appreciation to Obama and Americans “for the United States’ investment in the Iron Dome rocket and mortar defense system, which has effectively defeated hundreds of incoming rockets from Gaza and saved countless Israeli lives.”

On the same day, Obama had a phone conversation with Egyptian President Morsi to discuss escalation of tension in the Middle East.

“The President expressed regret for the loss of Israeli and Palestinian civilian lives, and underscored the importance of resolving the situation as quickly as possible to restore stability and prevent further loss of life. The two leaders agreed to stay in close contact during the coming days,” says the statement issued by the White House.
