YEREVAN. – The presidential-prime ministerial system of governance is more beneficial for Armenia than the parliamentary system, opposition National Self-Determination Union (NSU) Chairman Paruyr Hayrikyan stated during a press conference on Wednesday.

In his words, the parliamentary system of governance has several shortfalls, as a result of which the First Republic of Armenia fell in 1920. And if lessons are not learned from history, the mistakes could be repeated.  

As per the NSU leader, by voting in the president and the MPs alike, it is apparent that the body politic plays twice as greater role in the formation of the government in the presidential-system countries. “At present, Armenia is a parliamentary-presidential republic. But if the president does not represent the parliamentary majority, that majority could push the president to the sidelines,” he said.  

In Paruyr Hayrikyan’s view, the presidential system of governance could be the best option for Armenia.
