YEREVAN. – Armenia’s ruling Republican Party (RPA) did not possess the necessary political will to take part in Wednesday’s special session at the National Assembly (NA) and to show that the programs proposed by the opposition could cause damage. Consequently, all the statements—which are made by President and RPA leader Serzh Sargsyan, the Government, and RPA—with respect to holding fair elections are lies. Opposition Armenian National Movement Party Board Chairman and opposition bloc Armenian National Congress’ NA Faction Secretary Aram Manukyan said this, on the same day, while approaching the demonstrators in front of the NA building.
In Manukyan’s words, the authorities know all too well that in the case of fair elections, they will not receive enough votes even to enter the parliament and they cannot win the presidential elections, either.
“Therefore their position is a message to the political forces: ‘Do what you want! We don’t need fair elections, and we don’t care about the international organizations and the Armenian body politic.’ What remains for us is to determine our future courses of action.
Except for the RPA, the remaining parliamentary forces now need to develop a united program and prepare for the upcoming presidential elections. The authorities themselves are a factor in this. We are obligated to form a single political alliance and participate in the presidential elections,” Aram Manukyan noted.
