YEREVAN.- Parliament is a home to the country’s citizens, not only those elected to represent people’s interests, but those who elected the lawmakers, European People’s Party President Wilfried Martens said in Yerevan.

Wilfried Martens addressed on Friday Yerevan-hosted forum “Parliamentary Orientation and Cooperation with Civil Society for European Integration: Values and Experience”.

Martens believes the civil society should be able to easily enter the parliament and communicate with members who, in their turn, should work transparently.

“I want to thank the Speaker of the Armenian Parliament for opening the doors of the Parliament and the civil society to conduct this event,” he emphasized.

EPP President noted that democracy must play a role in countries such as Armenia, which are in a transitional post-Soviet phase. The reforms, including the electoral code and anti-corruption programs, are needed to achieve democracy, he stressed.

Martens said democracy is not only the bridge between policy makers and the society, but the wind of change that is hard to stop.

After delivering speech in the National Assembly, Wilfried Martens was received by President Serzh Sargsyan.
