YEREVAN.- European Commission head said stability and settlement of the conflict are the tasks to be tackled for Armenia and neighboring states to use their potential in full.

The closed borders create obvious and tangible economics risks putting up barriers for growth and income, Jose Manual Barroso said in Yerevan.

Progress in the Karabakh peace process remains a top priority in EU’s foreign policy, the official noted.

There is an opinion that the conflict is frozen and there is no possible solution. Although, it is a difficult task, Barroso is confident it is possible to establish peace.   

“It is not only possible but necessary thing to do. We call on the sides to remain committed to the Minsk Group process by words and deeds, and return to the discussion of key issues,” he said, noting importance of showing restraint in statements and actions in order not to jeopardize the basic principles.

He said the EU stands ready to provide enlarged assistance in addition to the OSCE Minsk Group efforts. There are Madrid principles, only political courage is needed, he emphasized.
