YEREVAN. – Armenia’s parliamentary majority publicly promised that the matter of forming a National Assembly (NA) ad hoc committee—to examine the tragic events that occurred in capital city Yerevan on March 1, 2008—will be entered into the NA agenda following the 2013 presidential elections. But we have serious grounds not to believe in this promise, opposition bloc Armenian National Congress (ANC) NA Faction leader Levon Zurabyan stated Monday.

“If the parliamentary majority breaks the public promise, the ANC Faction will make use of all the opportunities endowed by the NA Rules of Procedure and issue the bill on forming an ad hoc committee,” Zurabyan said.

NA Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan, however, noted that the parliamentary opposition is exerting al efforts to create the impression that the ruling Republican Party is against investigation the aforesaid tragedy. “The party in power is exerting al efforts to resolve that matter,” Abrahamyan assured.

To note, eight protesters and two soldiers of the Internal Troops had lost their lives in downtown Yerevan as a result of the confrontation that occurred between the opposition and the authorities on March 1, 2008.
