YEREVAN.- Armenian peacekeepers in Afghanistan are playing a role model, Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan told reporters on Wednesday.

Minister Ohanyan has recently traveled to Afghanistan to visit two Armenian peacekeeping units.

"The purpose of the visit was to get familiarized with the situation, the problems and conditions of service. I personally see the progress in the performance of the tasks,” he said.

Ohanyan stressed that during the meeting with Afghanistan’s Defense Minister and the command of international peacekeeping forces, service of the Armenian troops was praised.

The Minister emphasized that Armenian troops are playing a role model, recalling the Armenian soldiers had built a chapel in Kunduz airport used by all the Christian soldiers serving there.

During the visit, representatives of Armenia and Afghanistan outlined the ways of cooperation between the defense ministries. The Minister noted that military service conditions have improved since his previous visit two years ago.

Armenian peacekeepers have been serving in Afghanistan since January 2010. Armenian contingent of 126 peacekeepers is serving under the ISAF Regional Command North in Mazar-i-Sharif and Kunduz airport.
