YEREVAN. – Despite the recent incident that occurred with Armenia’s presidential candidate, opposition National Self-Determination Union Chairman Paruyr Hayrikyan, solely a formality presidential election will be held in Armenia and its result will be apparent. Caucasus Institute Deputy Director, political analyst Sergey Minasyan said this during a press conference on Monday.  

“No country in the world is immune to such unforeseen incidents, but such events cannot have a significant impact on the standing of a state,” Minasyan noted.  

In his view, even though there is no serious competition in Armenia’s political arena, there is an informational battle. 

“Even considering the incident that occurred with Hayrikyan and its great media attention, the precept of justice is preserved in the [country’s] election campaign,” the political scientist concluded. 

To note, Paruyr Hayrikyan—who sustained a gunshot wound as a result of an assassination attempt on January 31 and who still is recovering at hospital—informed that he will decide on Tuesday as to whether or not he will petition to the Constitutional Court with a formal request to postpone the forthcoming presidential election—which is slated for February 18—for two weeks.
