YEREVAN. – Overall, the election campaign in Armenia should not be taken seriously, governance analyst Harutyun Mesropyan said during a press conference on Monday.  

In his words, all presidential candidates are engaged in these processes with the objective of raising their own worth and import. Mesropyan noted that there are two key factors that demonstrate the triviality of the forthcoming presidential vote in Armenia.

“No candidate is presenting his [political] team. If another contender [other than the ruling Republican Party presidential candidate, incumbent President Serzh Sargsyan] is elected—albeit it is highly unlikely—, we do not know which institutions his supporters will head,” the analyst maintained.     

As the second factor, he noted that some political parties have decided not to run in the presidential election, and thereby they refused to carry out their fundamental functions. 

“If they state that they cannot win the election, this bespeaks their weakness. And if they are capable but are not running [in the election], this means they are not parties,” Harutyun Mesropyan concluded.
