YEREVAN. – The rallies and demonstrations being held in Azerbaijan attest to the situation in that country, Caucasus Institute Director, political scientist Alexander Iskandaryan told Armenian News-NEWS.am.   

“Azerbaijan is a Middle Eastern petrol state with a quite peculiar façade, with which it presents itself to the outside world. But behind the façade there is a completely different country, where societal polarization is very huge, [even] greater than in Armenia,” the analyst noted.   

In his words, a series of “hunger-stricken riots” are taking place in Azerbaijan.

“This shows that the social situation in this country is very serious. It is incomprehensible as to how Azerbaijan’s leadership will resolve this problem. It constantly says the country is at war with Armenia, and therefore huge sums are spent, not on the residents, but rather on armaments, by means of which the problem, as if, will soon be resolved,” Alexander Iskandaryan said, and added, however, that the people are gradually stopping to believe in this.
