YEREVAN. – The Investigation into the case—which was launched in connection with the assassination attempt against Armenia’s former presidential candidate, opposition National Self-Determination Union Chairman, Paruyr Hayrikyan—is completed. Hayrikyan’s attorney, Levon Baghdasaryan, informed this during a press conference on Friday.  

In his words, however, there are several observations and motions which they are preparing to make during the trial stage.   

Baghdasaryan still claimed that, aside from the three defendants, there are other perpetrators, too. He noted that the trial will clarify whether or not fellow former presidential contender, non-party affiliate, epic poetry specialist Vardan Sedrakyan is the actual person that gave the directive for the failed assassination attempt against Hayrikyan. But the attorney added that, at present, he has no grounds to distrust the law enforcement.

He further informed that the actual shooter claimed that he did not want to kill Hayrikyan, but rather just wanted to scare him.

“But it is beyond logic as to why he fired into his [that is, Hayrikyan’s] chest to scare him,” Levon Baghdasaryan said. 

As Armenian News-NEWS.am informed earlier, on March 28, the Government of Armenia allocated 20,500,000 drams (approx. $50,000) to the Health Ministry to pay for the costs of Paruyr Hayrikyan’s medical treatment to be conducted abroad. The amount was allocated from the Government reserve fund.

To note, Hayrikyan was wounded as a result of an assassination attempt that was staged against him on January 31 and during the campaign season for the presidential election that was held on February 18.

According to preliminary calculations, Paruyr Hayrikyan’s treatment abroad can be carried out for around $50,000.
