YEREVAN. – The political opposition in Armenia should have joined forces during the presidential election on February 18. First Secretary Ruben Tovmasyan of the Communist Party of Armenia (CPA) Central Committee told Armenian News-NEWS.am, responding to the query on the likelihood of the opposition forces’ consolidation after the capital city Yerevan Council elections to be conducted on May 5.     

“The consolidation of the opposition forces is impossible following the Yerevan Council elections. Even if this were to happen and the opposition were to get some advantage, it would change nothing,” the Communist politician noted.  

In Tovmasyan’s words, the opposition’s consolidation is unlikely because each party that is running in the Yerevan municipal vote states that the first number in its own list is the one who deserves to be the mayor.

“The tension among the political forces will escalate during the election campaign. Only after May 5 will it be clear as to who was right and who [was] wrong,” the CPA leader said, and he recalled that the Communist Party of Armenia is not running in the Yerevan Council elections.
